JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, YENIGADALE - SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL SCHOOL COMES AGAIN!

YENIGADALE - where it all began - a relationship between two organizations - SUMPOORNA and JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIYALAYAS. `Since you came - most of our children are crazy about basketball' - and a phone call `Sir, WHY DIDN'T YOU COME AGAIN'. These small tugs at my heart HOW CAN I `FORGET' Yenigadale. As long as I live, every year, at least once I shall come JNV, Yenigadale.

AND WHEN I AM TOO OLD TO COME - I SHALL ARRANGE FOR YOU TO COME TO SUMPOORNA! This is a promise. Basketball is no more a game for me - it is a medium of developing relationships with children. The older I get - the more I realize; the importance of playing in our life.

PUT ON YOUR SHOES - GET READY FOR SHOOTING BASKETS - THE SUMPOORNA FAMILY COMES TO YOU ON 6TH AUG.

CALLING ALL BASKETBALL PLAYERS FROM INDIA

I, Subhash Mahajan, from SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL SCHOOL, call all basketball players of India. I need your collaboration - I need your experience - I NEED YOU: to set in motion PROMOTION OF BASKETBALL throughout the length and breadth of the country.

NBA, National Basketball Association, has grand plans to promote basketball in our country. They would visit the posh cities of India, do some clinics, train some hundred or so players. WHAT ABOUT THE HUGE BASKETBALL PLAYING POPULATION OF THE COUNTRY WHICH RESIDES IN RURAL AREAS. That is where the real talent lies.

Let us build a net-work of `rural tournaments' in player friendly environments for the young school children of our country. YOU ARE NEEDED AS NEVER BEFORE. You must create your own net-work and we must collaborate with everyone who is into basketball. Let us promote BASKETBALL in rural areas the way cricket is played.

LET US INNOVATE - AND MAKE IT AN EXCITING GAME! Every school shall have a hoop and its share of hoop maniacs. ARISE, AWAKE and stop not till an Indian plays in NBA.

SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL LEAGUE or A.B.L.E. CUP

A very senior basketball official cum coach had once remarked `Children below 15 years are not ABLE to play basketball. It is too complicated for them. A.B.L.E. Academy for Basketball Learning was born. The success of ABLE is history. A marathon run of matches at different venues - never to be repeated by anyone.

SUMPOORNA basketball is the battle-cry of the `deprived rural children'. Basketball courts are too expensive - say the officials. Well, we have gone ahead and built very nice courts in rural areas and we are `collaborating' with school managements to build basketball training facilities. Success has been beyond our wildest expectations.

Now, a time has come to decide whether to re-introduce the concept of A.B.L.E. once again. AND what direction Sumpoorna Basketball League should take? Decisions that will PROMOTE BASKETBALL in a friendly learning environment.

I still walk alone! I have stopped asking anyone to help me. But there are many who in their own way are `sustaining' the SUMPOORNA project. I am sure in the years to come - the ambassadors of basketball - will be able to promote this game in a much vigorous way.

SUMPOORNA CUP AT JNV, URDIGERE, TUMKUR ON 25TH AND 26TH JULY.

The stage is set for another SUMPOORNA CUP - this time it is set in JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, URDIGERE, DISTT. TUMKUR. The rings are at 8 feet height - so it would mean adaptation. Players who get used to the ring height earlier will be able to win their mathces. The last fun match I played here in my white pyjama kurta was exhilarating for I was able to make most of my three point shots.

Getting the teams to come here is going to be a logistical problem. Let us see how the managements respond to it.

V.S.C.BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2009

Fifty teams participated in this tournament - FIVE A SIDE. Photos have been uploaded on my orkut profile in record short time. I am exhausted but thrilled. Organizing tournaments comes naturally to me. I was able to hold the ship afloat mainly by lot of marketing moves.

Explaining to the errant players so that they understand is important. This will help them understand tournament ethics. I, however, understand that many schools pay only lip-sympathy to sports. The coaches are under pressure to perform although not many would have practiced much. It is like investing a paise to get hundred rupees overnight.

My 7/3 statement was probably bewildering to the basketball players. NOBODY HAS TOLD THEM YET - that there is a fundamental right to play. Any way I have gone ahead and told them THIS. I don't think they even believed me.

BUT I HAVE ALWAYS STARTED ALONE - CROWDS HAVE JOINED ONLY LATER! More I shall write on my blog - mahajannon-conformist.

V.S.C. BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ON 18th & 19th July, 2009

43 teams and still counting ----. Success of the tournament has already been assured by the sheer number of teams participating. When will I touch 100 teams?

Teams from Tumkur & Doddaballapur have also entered the fray. Good luck to all the teams participating. Rains bothered us today - hopefully the rain gods will listen to our prayers for Sat and Sun.

Gear school and Kensri school coaches are bringing large contingents!

Outwardly I am cool - my inside is overly joyful!

THE DESIRE TO LEARN BASKETBALL! TODAY I GUIDE YOU IN FLESH - TOMORROW MY SOUL SHALL.!

This was an incredible learning experience in basketball. The seeds that we had sown in JNV, Doddaballapur a few months back had sprouted and REARING TO GO! There was that athleticism rarely seen in basketball players from cities - there was the DESIRE TO LEARN BASKETBALL.

I saw this desire and I was in tears of joy. JNV DODDABALLAPUR will be an important point in my radar. They shall get as much learning as they want.

Regency Public School too didn't disappoint. They have picked up some finer points of the game - fitness is, of course, lacking. I told JYOTI - she agreed! Dekshita, as ususal, was like a bulllet out of a revolver - SHE STILL HAS THAT RESERVE which must be unleashed sooner or later - I must talk to her about it.

I will manipulate something for the 11th standard girls of JNV Dod - how can I deny you the process of learning basketball. V.S.C. cup will have a open `women' section - even if I have to import the team from Tumkur. Your DESIRE TO LEARN shall keep this man of 56 years battle-ready! Bhuvana, Priyanka and others with those twinkling eyes - I shall be ALWAYS THERE. Today, I am with you in flesh - tomorrow my soul shall guide you.

NETWORKING BASKETBALL LEARNING

All basketball players agree that enough networking is not done - i.e. practice sessions or friendly matches aren't there which would help them develop their talents.

So an attempt is being made to take REGENCY PUBLIC SCHOOL, VIDYARANYAPURA team play with JNV Doddaballapur on this Saturday. Hopefully this would be first of its kind and can be repeated elsewhere for other institutions too.

The game of basketball deserves this networking - the children will ultimately benefit a lot.

I could add more shorter version tournaments but the above is bare minimum.

SUMPOORNA WILL CREATE AND TRAIN YOUR SCHOOL TEAM!

TO ALL HEADMASTERS/PRICIPALS
6/6/2009
DEAR SIR/MADAM

SUMPOORNA has been imparting basketball learning for the last three years for children below 15 years [namely V std to VIII std]. Besides this, we have been creating basketball infrastructure too.

We provide basketball training within `your school campus' or at our residential school campus. The primary objective is to create `love' for the game and develop fitness as a bonus. A THREE DAY MODULE [at your campus] would cost Rs.One hundred per student. A FIVE DAY MODULE [at our campus] which would include all expenses [except transportation from your school to our place] would cost Rs.Two hundred fifty per student. The training programme would be from 7am to 7pm [Lunch break 1pm-3pm].

Further details can be had from us on phone 98860 20145. We can also provide `coaching facilities' on a regular basis to your school students.

BASKETBALL PROMOTION CAMP FROM 29-31ST MAY, 2009

SUMPOORNA provides a unique opportunity for educational institutions and individuals to introduce or learn the game of basketball.

To plan and streamline the activities of SUMPOORNA for the next few months a basketball promotion camp is being conducted from 29th to 31st May, 2009. Volunteers would be trained in `marketing of basketball' - `conducting of basketball tournaments' - `officiating tournaments for younger children' according to SUMPOORNA rules.

THIS WOULD ALSO BE THE LAST CAMP FOR THESE SUMMER HOLIDAYS. The programme would also look at `TREKKING' as an addditional sport.

SUMPOORNA CAMP FROM 6TH TO 10TH MAY

Mr. Anand from Shishu Mandir has been one of my best associates to help me promote my project SUMPOORNA. Every year without fail they have had training camps and I am amazed the way they learn everything so quickly. We expect around 8 children from Tumkur - 12 from Bangalore and 20 from Shishu Mandir.

8 TEAMS playing non-stop matches will vie for the honours in the SUMPOORNA TOURNAMENT and learning will be spontaneous. Everything will be managed by the children themselves - Table management, Refereeing, Coaching - the whole lot. THREE MORE GODS WILL ASSERT THEMSELVES ALONGWITH THE PREVIOUS FIVE. Shishya destroyed all the big names - but what will happen this time - time will tell.

I WANT TO CLIMB THE HILLS!

Tomorrow we will set out once again to the beckoning hills of Makalidurga. A group of 20 students from Shishu Mandir will join 40 VSC basketball students. Two lady volunteers have agreed to provide support for the girls and the junior students. As I prepare for tomorrow's trip - I go back FORTY FIVE YEARS when I was an eleven year old and I climbed my first hills in Kulu and Manali area.

Every holiday from my residential school meant `hill climbing' and my parents often got to see me in home only for 2 or 3 days before I was off for some mountaineering expeditions. WE DARED WHAT OTHERS FEARED. For me hill climbing became my religious yearning and I met GOD everytime I climbed a hill. And the few occasions when either due to exams or due to other reasons I had to cancel a hill climbing programme - it was sheer torture. SNOW CLIMBING with special boots - getting lost - almost being killed by an avalanche - digging a cave in snow which collapsed in the night - WHAT WAS IT THAT I DIDN'T DO.

As I re-live the hill climbing days of my youth when my sons were growing up - the joy they got - the A.S.H.A. that was created specially for other children - more than one hundred camps all over - which were the hillocks which we didn't climb - where are these children now?

I am FIFTY-SIX YEARS and the yearning for climbing Makalidurga alongwith these 60 children is so great that I can't even explain it. IF I CAN PASS ON MY LOVE FOR CLIMBING HILLS TO THESE CHILDREN THE EFFORT WOULD HAVE BEEN WORTH WHILE. As the growing city of Bangalore dynamites these small hillocks for buildings a day will surely come when there will be no more hills for children to climb.

The children of future would clamour `I WANT TO CLIMB THE HILLS'but will any be left!

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM BASKETBALL CAMP?

It depends on who you are? A coach - a parent or a child. A coach would want serious students who are ready to learn the game of basketball. Parents would want their child to enjoy the camp. A child would like to become a good basketball player - but may or maynot have the right attitude.

When such diverse WANTS are present - it is difficult to create a convergence. So an experienced coach would probabaly mix his `actions' - so that everyone is satisfied. But then indiviudal coaches would `think' individually.

HENCE AN EDUCATION PLAN FOR THE COACH - THE PARENT - THE CHILD is a must. When they understand each others' `goals' - it will result in meeting most of the aspirations of these diverse groups.

THE COACH must be able to classify the students - serious ones must be given their due while maintaining a `pleasant' face for the students who have come to enjoy the game.

THE PARENT must understand that learning a game entails developing discipline in attendance - regular interaction with their child as well as the coach helps improve understanding of the child's needs.

THE CHILD must be able to develop a proper attitude to get the maximum benefit of such camp for otherwise it is a waste of time.

ALL THREE must develop an `interaction' programme so that benefits of these camps can be maximised.

APPOINT ME YOUR SCHOOL'S BASKETBALL COACH!

TO ALL SCHOOLS WHO HAVE A BASKERBALL COURT BUT DONOT HAVE A COACH
[ and all those schools which have `space’ physically and mentally to start basketball]

Subject : APPOINTMENT AS BASKETBALL COACH FOR YOUR INSTITUTIONS
IN ORDER TO PROMOTE EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS.

Respected Sir/Madam,

At the very outset I thank you for providing me an opportunity to work with the staff and children of your educational institutions who have always given me their whole hearted support and love. We have succeeded in only a limited way. The reasons are multi-dimensional and well understood by me.

In order to create a CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE in sports [specially basketball], I request you to kindly appoint me as a Basketball coach cum sports adviser. This will help me in interacting with students and their parents on a regular basis – and plan their training schedules [in campus or outside campus]. The objective is to provide opportunity for learning and exercising their talents at the highest level so that these children can become role models. This will generate enthusiasm and willingness to play in the entire school as also help parents understand the role of `play’ in education.

The UN CHARTER for fundamental rights of the children states
The child shall have full opportunity for play and recreation, which should be directed to the same purposes as education; society and the public authorities, shall endeavor to promote the enjoyment of this right.

It is unfortunate that school managements under pressure from parents, educational authorities and `academic minded’ teachers is unable to protect this fundamental right. A strong and healthy child is an asset for all of us and the ENDURANCE – DISCIPLINE – JOY that sports can give must not be denied to them.

I have found all my answers to my life from `playing basketball’ – I hope to transfer this same zeal to all my students – given the opportunity.

Yours truly,

THE BASKETBALL CAMP FOR ME!

Yesterday the VSC was totally empty. So I did what I do best - made some lazy baskets; some of them so carelessly attempted its a wonder they GO IN. A girl of 4 years then took my ball away and I had to watch her playing for 45 minutes before I got the ball back. Did lot of stretching during this time.

Today, it was Nithin-Rakshita and Harshita: and we had a wonderful two on two. Some things just have to happen - I fell down and landed very softly - the 11 year old Rakshita rushed in to help me get up. AS I GOT UP I TOLD HER IF YOU DONOT USE ENOUGH FORCE - WE WILL BOTH FALL DOWN AGAIN! Luckily she managed to get me up.

After they left played two on two with Shabrish-Ashrey&Akash. Made lot of three pointers. Also made some `poor' and good passes. Consistency is lacking. EXHAUSTED came back home. My basketball camp has just begun - from 15th March, the children will start coming back.

VSC's CLASS-WISE TOURNAMENT ON 22-2-2009 & PLANS FOR MAHASHIVARATRI BASKETBALL

Nothing is more distressing than to know that spoilsport `tests' and `exams' are taking my students away from the basketball court. CAN ENJOYMENT FOR AN HOUR ON THE BASKETBALL COURT S P O I L learning?

What sort of a mind-set have be evolved? The response to the class-wise tournament seems to be poor - let us see what happens on the D day. The hard boiled response to this could be to keep giving children more and more of basketball so that they take the tests and exams in their stride.

On Maha Shivaratri day we could have some prize money competitions [OR MEDALS ONLY]. We could have ten events in which everyone should participate by paying an entry fee of Rs.10. The overall winner gets 50% of the collection and the balance 50% is given to event winners. OR we could do it without any entry fee and just give away medals.

What could be these TEN EVENTS? How much it would take for every event to be finished?
Of course, the objective is get the maximum number of people involved.

BASKETBALL CAMP AT JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, DODDABALLAPUR

On 14th Feb, 2009 I set out with the ten VNS-ITES from Bangalore and we reached JNV by
6-30a.m. Without much ado we put away our bags in the guest house and almost 100 children started learning the nuances of dribbling.

EXPERIENCE DOES MATTER! Having trained thousands of children in different settings, I am, at times, amazed at myself - as to how do I do what I do. Instinctively I shift various drills depending upon the `interest' created. There was total support from all concerned and small doubts were soon swept away.

We have observed that taking BASKETBALL EDUCATION to schools is like taking WATER TO DESERT. Children are hungry for `sports-joy' - in our own way we are catering to a crying need. By evening we were in the `match-mode'. Everyone was thrilled - and we announced that next day it would be a TOURNAMENT DAY. It must be a record of sorts - teach basketball on day one and play tournament on day two.

The VNS-ITES behaved exactly the way `basketball players' behave. In the end, they lost their semi-final matches from children who were almost 3-4 years elder. The exhibition of their skills was a great lesson for the JNS-ITES.

Mr. Palani, the principal and the staff of JNV honoured us and made us feel on top of the world.

WHICH JNV NEXT?

V.S.C's Basketball Tournament

It's been many years since I counducted any Basketball tournament in Bangalore what with my preoccupation of promoting basketball in Tumkur Distt. for the last three years. The tournament starved children of Bangalore finally burst open in the demonstration of their skills and it was a sight. The `exhibition' of text-book basketball by St. Mary's School, Gandhinagar, Tumkur was the icing on the cake.

The participating schools were - Gnana Teja, Cluny Convent-Jalahalli, BEL-CBSE, Kensri, K.V Composite, Regency P.S, St. Mary's Tumkur, St. Lourdes' - and others.

Standing for long long hours; patting the back of players; admonishing fouls; suggesting to the rookies; looking at small bruises - it all happened. Navdeep HELPED! After that it was easy. Referreeing `justly' - the key to success of tournaments - added to joy of everyone.

THE YEAR OF SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL CONTINUES - BASKETBALL - MORE BASKETBALL - STILL MORE BASKETBALL.

V.S.C's BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ON 7TH & 8TH FEB 2009

Although I am not very sure about how many teams would participate in this tournament. But the momentum to conduct such events is there and must be utilised.

I now have many young children rearing to go for `action' in Bangalore so this tournament. This should be followed up by TIPTUR and then KORATAGERE tournaments. We will send messages to all teams for participation and then take it from there.

SCHOOL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS are the oasis of deserts. The future basketball players of this country have been deprived of `sports' - I shall endeavour to see that they get the right dosage.

SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL CAMP AT JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, DODDABALLPUR will be held on 14th Feb and 15th Feb, 2009. The juggernaut to promote basketball is rolling! More than one hundred children will become hoop-maniacs adding themselves into the rolls of thousands of SUMPOORNITES.

Mr. Hosamani from JNV, Yenigadale tells us that these days all his school children want to play only basketball. This rings a bell in my memory - Mrs. Hamsa Vithani of Vidya Niketan School, Kempapura, Hebbal saying those prophetic words `All parents are blaming that the VNS is promoting only basketball - this, when only two years back hardly anybody played basketball.' This was almost ten years ago.

SUMPOORNA WILL GO ANYWHERE - WHERE EVER THE CALL COMES FROM - TO PROMOTE THE GAME OF BASKETBALL!

THE TWELVE SUMPOORNITES AT YENIGADALE

When Mohammad brought these eleven `small sized' players on the morning of 1st Jan, 2009 to Bangalore I wondered if I was doing the right thing. Individually, I have trained a crowd of more than 500 with about 60 balls - but that was only for one day and the lessons dealt with dribbling only. Here, we had to create basketball players in less than three days.

These fellows hardly settled in the Scorpio before they started singing their favorite songs and a couple of mine too. In no time, I felt cocooned in their warmth and from then on it was a breeze. The people who trusted me with their young wards - I cannot thank them enough.

Who were these pioneers in arms with me - BHAVANA, ANUSHA, AJITA, MADHUSHRI, PRASHANTH, MICHAEL, MADHU, ANIL, JEEVAN, LOHIT, RAKSHIT AND from bangalore SUHAS.

BASKETBALL MANIA AT JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, YENIGADALE

Twelve of us from Sumpoorna landed in Yenigadale at 10a.m. Within half an hour we were on the basketball court [they have two courts] with around 80 children willing to learn THE GAME.

A demo game by sumpoornites raised the normal thought in every new student - I CAN DO BETTER. Of course, when they were given their first dribbling lessons, they realised that what seemed so simple wasn't so. First day it was a combination of dribbling and passing lessons and then it happened - THEY WANTED TO PLAY A MATCH!

What is it about basketball matches that makes ROOKIES think they can fly like Michael Jordan - I wonder! Arms flinging in all directions, all the nine players trying to snatch the ball from the `one in possession' [irrespective of which team he or she is]. I have seen this hundreds of times and wonder what `motivates' them to GO FOR THE BALL.

The second day was an `action' packed day with variables in dribbling and passing. Late in the afternoon when LAY-UPS elementary lessons became a little boring - the chant of `matches - matches' reached my ears. SUMPOORNITES who eat, drink and sleep basketball too joined in. What could I then do.

MATCHES CREATE THAT RAPID LEARNING WHICH ONE CANNOT GET EVEN IN ONE YEAR OF BASKETBALL COACHING. Evening session began with inter-house boys' and girls' matches. The will to win for the house created more excitement. Fouls were rewarded with minus points and that calmed the things a little bit. If two fouls were committed for one basket scored by the same team - the score was ZERO.

The third day - the match veterans that our new basketball players had become saw the toughest battles. TRAVELLING violation became lesser and lesser - PASSING BECAME THE KEY - and one long distance shot that went through the hoop brought the house down. A basketball player with the ball is always two feet taller than his normal height - his gait at least suggests it.

Then, before we knew it, it was time to say GOOD BYE. The sumpoornites were mobbed with shake-hands, high fives, pats on the back and little sorrow that BYE BYE brings with it.
