2009 - THE YEAR OF SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL - FIRST CAMP AT JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, YENIGADALE, CHINTAMANI TQ, KOLAR DISTT.

SUMPOORNA is going places - YENIGADALE in Chintamani Taluk to be specific. Nothing makes me more angry than the fact that there is a basketball court and NO PLAYERS! Sumpoorna will change this. We will travel as much as it takes to see that every primary school has a shooting ring; every high school has a shooting board and every pre university college has a basketball court.

LUCKILY FOR US - IT SEEMS MOST OF THE JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYAS HAVE BASKETBALL COURTS.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya's dynamic principal Mrs. Vijay Kumari has invited SUMPOORNA for a THREE DAY basketball training camp. Twelve children will travel with me for demonstrating the beauty of this game and create more than 100 players in the school.

Playing basketball - training basketball players - creating basketball infrastructure - AND NOW travelling basketball camps! From 1st Jan to 3rd Jan, 2009 the basketball court of Yenigadale will reverbate with the sound of the bouncing basketballs. The year of SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL - 2009 - has begun with a bang!

BASKETBALL ! BASKETBALL! BASKETBALL!

Can a basketball player ever have enough of Basketball? The answer is NO - NO - NO.

So, from 26th to 30th December there will be a camp at SUMPOORNA.

Then FIVE BOYS and FIVE GIRLS will assist me in a camp at Yenigadale {Kolar Distt} from 1st Jan to 3rd Jan.

AND, of course, the Basket ball tournament from 9th Jan to 11th Jan in TUMKUR.

The only way to end an year is to play basketball and the only way to begin an year is to play still more basketball.

LET 2009 BE THE YEAR OF SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL.

WHEN IS THE NEXT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN TUMKUR DISTT?

For two days, I ran up and down the court, whistling at fouls, cautioning very aggressive players and watching the metamorphosis of a very young basketballing district into something of a reckoning. MY CUP OF JOY FILLETH. There is nothing - absolutely nothing that can take the place of a real tournament which `bloods' young basketball players.

So, no wonder, you keep asking even before the dust settles on the SARGANTINE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT - WHEN IS THE NEXT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN TUMKUR DISTRICT? I, Subhash Mahajan, promise my young basketball players this - VERY SOON! It was a joy to see you play this beautiful game - this game that I love - this game that I live.

To be able to play matches not only `school wise' or `college wise' - but also mix the players in different ways to LEARN THIS GAME - you are advised to give your Name, address and contact phone number to my friend Mr. Arunodaya Kumar - St. Mary Kannada Primary School, Gandhinagar, Tumkur on or before 20-12-2008. The inauguration of Tumkur Distt. Basketball Players' Association will also be done in the coming days.

SARGANTINE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT was possible because of YOU - THE BASKETBALL PLAYER OF TUMKUR DISTT. All of us - CSI tumkur dignitaries, Bishop Sargent authorities, St. Mary School PE teachers, Sumpoorna volunteers, Senior basketball players of Tumkur and our well-wishers - enjoyed THE MOVE!

SARGANTINE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT-THE WAR TO MAKE INDIA A SPORTING SUPER POWER CAN BEGIN!

Finally, the showdown will begin at 7-30a.m. today. The new RCC basketball court at Bishop Sargant School, Tumkur has attracted more than 44 teams totalling more than 250 students. The figure would have been larger if some schools didn't have `tests'.

In two days, 38 matches will be played - heart-breaks and rejoicing will be a continuous process. The battles will be on for two days. AND AFTER THIS THE WAR TO MAKE INDIA A SPORTING SUPER POWER CAN BEGIN.

TUMKUR BASKETBALL- SARGANTINE BASKETBALL CUP - 4TH & 5TH DECEMBER

When SUMPOORNA set out to promote Basketball in Distt. Tumkur - there were a host of problems, chiefly among them was the attitude that WHO PLAYS BASKETBALL? In such a scenario Mrs Elizabeth Thomas, Principal, Bishop Sargant institutions' had a clear vision - I WANT MY SCHOOL CHILDREN TO PLAY BASKETBALL.

And she set out earnestly to arrange for the best basketball court; encouraged the children to attend basktball camps at SUMPOORNA campus.

More than FORTY TEAMS will participate in this tournament - a fitting tribute to Mrs Thomas's vision. THANK YOU MADAM!

NBA IN INDIA - IN BANGALORE - WHITHER TUMKUR

There is great news - NBA icons are lining up to train Indian Basketball players. A special camp at Bangalore will probably help all those who know `such' a camp is going on. Of course, other than Bangalore players none others will be able to `leave' their daily routines and hence will be deprived of this opportunity. BUT IT IS HAPPENING - THE INDIAN GIANT IS SLOWLY STIRRING - NOT INSPITE OF BUT DESPITE the efforts of many to hold on to their fiefdoms.

Week after week I drive down to SUMPOORNA at TUMKUR with a bunch of motley crowd who drink, eat and sleep basketball. Their passion for playing is enormous - this grass-root promotion is perhaps a first genuine attempt to promote the game of basketball for those who donot have the OPPORTUNITY.

WILL NBA COME TO TUMKUR? OR BETTER STILL WILL A SUMPOORNITE ONE DAY BECOME A NBA PLAYER! The answer will come up within the next two decades.

CELEBRATING DIWALI - IN STARLIT SKIES OR THUNDERING CLOUDS

This is a basketball camp with difference. No crackers, no sweets - no noise, no junk food! The stars will be our sparklers - thundering clouds will be our crackers; basketball will be played as a `celebration'. From 25th Oct to 29th Oct - the sumpoornites would be doing different things than normal. There will be trekking - climbing hills and visiting villages surrounding our camp site and, of course, there will be basketball.

NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SIMPLE JOYS OF LIFE - LET ME PLAY IS THE PRAYER OF THE CHILD.

SPORTS EDUCATION – PROJECT SUMPOORNA – MR. SUBHASH MAHAJAN – VIDYARANYAPURA

SPORTS EDUCATION : It is imperative that every school impart proper sports education to their students. The present `system’ is not adequate; neither in meeting the aspirations of the children nor in terms of producing quality players at the grass root level. The matter keeps hanging fire because the school teachers [especially the physical education teacher] are already overburdened with various odd duties. Imagine having twenty teachers for different subjects from art to zoology and having one P.E. teacher for 500 children. Sports education seems impossible! Yet there is a way out.

PROJECT SUMPOORNA: A 30 acre residential sports facility is being developed about 90Kms from Bangalore. In the initial phase BASKETBALL has been taken up and for the last two years thousands of children from surrounding areas as also Bangalore have undergone `training’. In a 3 day camp the knowledge of basic skills of the game are taught. The objective is to develop love for the sport and set them on their way to `practice’ the game’s skills. Individual children or school groups [along with their teacher] can join in this programme. A nominal expense towards `transportation” and `food’ is the only cost. The training material – the coaching – boarding are all FREE.

MR.SUBHASH MAHAJAN: A product of SAINIK SCHOOL [from Punjab] aged 55 years is the Coach for vidyaranyapura sports club and has been promoting basketball as a `joyful’ game for children below the age of 15 years. As a co-coordinator for project Sumpoorna, he has developed learning strategies which attract children to the game. The benefits of physical fitness through this game are explained in theory classes. He has given coaching to hundreds of students of all leading schools of Bangalore and addresses concerns of all – school management, parents and children.

The school management is assured of a scientific `training’ programme which helps them build school teams in a very short time. Practice sessions can be conducted even if basketball courts are not available.

The parents are always anxious about providing `wholesome’ physical activity to their children but don’t know whom to approach, where to go and how to `time’ the academics with sports. We will provide viable solutions which satisfy them.

The children often get attracted to new games or programmes and then very quickly give up because either too much physical fitness is demanded or don’t fit into the crowd. This is where we put up our best because the child is the centre of our programme and his/her aspirations have to be met every time.

VIDYARANYAPURA: Vidyaranyapura has a very good basketball court and it is a unique opportunity for the children to come and play basketball regularly. Some schools have recently started constructing basketball courts in their premises and this is a step in the right direction. Children staying in vidyaranyapura and surrounding areas can learn the game of basketball in the right ENVIRONMENT in the right WAY from a BASKETBALL COACH having vast experience. Happiness in achievement and good health is assured.

A SPECIAL BASKETBALL CAMP

REGENCY PUBLIC SCHOOL, VIDYARANYAPURA, BANGALORE

A lot can happen when school managements are ready to experiment and explore `newer' methods of education. Regency Public School is one such school - more than 80 children from this school have visited SUMPOORNA campus to learn Basketball.

SUMPOORNA provides an `elixir of basketball learning' and it is a feat of sorts when IVth and Vth standard students are able to play MATCHES, with very minor violations - the `basket' scorers walk in the air [already heroes for their teams] with `broad' shoulders for added effect. Their belief in themselves is reinforced and having been sumpoornised they can look forward to exciting `basketball matches' for the rest of their life.

Thank you REGENCY - we value your relationship.

THE ALL GIRLS' CAMP ON 13/9 & 14/9

It A M A Z E S me again and again. The size doesn't matter! SUMPOORNA has that influence on children - by the time they are ready to go home - THEY ARE BASKETBALL PLAYERS. No matter how much of a beginner they are. AND THE PEOPLE who already know basketball - its a new dimension of HOW MUCH basketball they can play.

Players are given matches like crumbs of bread - it leaves them hungrier - SUMPOORNA satisfies that HUNGER FOR BASKETBALL, and that's why they want to come again and again. The two seniors who joined from Bangalore - they were A M A Z E D too!

Camps begin from 1/4/2008 and end on 30/5/2008. Annual camps begin from 1/6/2008 and end on 31/12/2008.
